Work History

Work History

I have built and managed two computer labs over a 7 year period and assisted in several others. I have also worked extensively in the technical support field. Over that time I have learned much about hardware and software integration, server administration, webpage design, video editing, and networking.
I enjoy working in a multi platform environment with creative people.

1997-2002 Lab Manager

University of Texas

Center for Advanced Studies in the Arts at The University of Texas.

CASA was a faculty research lab supporting the arts. Faculty would use the facility to build teaching materials, research technological artistic endeavors, hold classes, and receive technical assistance for any range of things they were doing.

When I started working on it, there were two computers. A macintosh 9500 with a Media 100 system with two raids drives and an 8500 for scanning, etc. The lab was well funded so it grew quickly. we received donations of computers as well as buying our own.

By the time I left, we had 20 computers, many input and output devices, and still no staff to help in keeping things running, assisting projects, managing students,

I picked up a fair amount of experience in project management, since many of the faculty were somewhat ill prepared for what they wanted to do.

Some aspects of the Lab:

  • Vocal Lab
  • VR workstation
  • Video editing
  • Audio editing
  • Slide scanning

Every computer in CASA had a different configuration and different software. the lab was also extremely reconfigurable to accommodate the many different types of projects that we supported.

Since the entire lab had nearly the same software on every computer I created a refresh system using revRdist. It cleaned up the computers every night at shutdown and recopied any programs that might have been removed. It was also useful in the event of a system corruption as the computer just needed to be formatted with a new os and RevRdist would take care of the rest.
